Pottery does not have to mean wheel-thrown vessels. Clay sculpting class at Zen Ceramic is for students who want to make 3D forms — figurines, animals, abstract sculpture, decorative pieces. Same clay, same kiln, same glazing process — but the form is whatever you imagine.

Wheel throwing has its rules — symmetric, cylindrical, functional. Hand-building bowls and mugs follow forms. Sculpting frees you from all of that. You decide what to make: a figurine of your dog, an abstract organic form for the office shelf, a sculpted character, a piece of decorative wall art. The format suits people whose creativity wants more freedom than a bowl-shaping class allows.

Three main approaches: solid sculpting (build the full form from a clay block, suitable for small pieces under 15cm), hollow sculpting (combine slabs to form a hollow piece, allows larger sculptures up to 30cm), and armature-based sculpting (build over a clay or wire frame, allows complex extended forms like figurines with limbs). Our instructors will recommend the best approach for your project at the start of class.

A 2-hour single class can accommodate small to medium sculpting projects (figurine of your pet, an abstract form for the desk, a stylised bird or fish). Larger or more detailed projects (full character figurine with armature, multi-piece dioramas, larger decorative sculpture) usually need 2 to 3 sessions. We can plan a multi-session sculpting project across consecutive weekends.

Sculpted pieces use the same kiln-firing process as functional pottery — bisque firing, then glaze application, then second firing. The glaze choices for sculpture are different though: matte finishes often look better for figurative pieces, glossy finishes work for organic and abstract forms. Our instructor will guide colour and finish selection at the painting stage.
If you want to make daily-use pieces (mugs, bowls, planters) rather than decorative sculpture, our standard pottery classes are the better starting point.
Pottery typically refers to functional vessel-making (bowls, mugs, plates) using either the wheel or hand-building. Clay sculpting refers to non-functional 3D form-making — figurines, decorative pieces, art objects. Same materials and firing process; different end goal.
Yes — we have hosted plenty of first-time sculpting students. The format is more forgiving than wheel throwing because there are no rotational symmetry rules. Our instructors guide you through technique, but creative direction is yours.
Standard hand-building rate applies: RM158 per adult, RM119 per kid for a 2-hour session. Larger multi-session sculpting projects (3 to 5 weekly sessions for an elaborate piece) can be quoted as a package. WhatsApp for custom-project pricing.
Yes — portrait sculpting is popular. Bring multiple reference photos (front, side, 3-quarter angle). Realistic likeness usually takes 2 to 3 sessions. Stylised likeness can sometimes be done in a single 2-hour class.
No more fragile than other pottery. Clay sculpture, properly fired, is durable as ceramic. Thin, extended details (limbs of a figurine, wing tips, etc.) are more vulnerable to bumps and need careful display. Our instructors design the form for structural integrity during the shaping phase.
